A Chatham Superior Court jury Tuesday awarded $284,000 to Chatham County Police Maj. James Stevens for injuries suffered
while working off duty with a show at the Savannah Civic Center.
The verdict was returned against Jeff Sharp and
his Talent Coordinators of America of Cockeysville, Md. Stevens, hired for internal security and general duties, suffered
back injuries Nov. 28, 1981, while helping the group prepare for its show here. He fell while loading a pickup truck.
Attorneys for the defendant failed to answer the suit, resulting in a default. Only damages were at issue before
the jury Tuesday. Stevens’ lawyer, Charles R. Ashman, asked the jury before Judge George E. Oliver to return between
$400,000 and $600,000 for the injuries.
